Radio Kootwijk was established in the nineteentwenties in order to communicate with the then colony Dutch Indies (now Indonesia). The building is constructed out of concrete in Art Nouveau-style in the midst of a vast heather field in central Netherlands. Besides short wave radio with the overseas possesions, Radio Kootwijk also provided communication with ships all over the world. In 1999 satellites had taken over and the last transmitter was shut down. After years of uncertainty about the faith of the building, it is now a monument and used for parties and meetings.

Zo’n bijzonder gebouw. Het ligt er ook bijzonder mooi. Dat er contact kon worden met alle schepen wist ik niet. Jammer dat er niet meer mee gedaan wordt. Gebruiken als museum b.v.

Het is echt een bijzonder gebouw met die wonderlijke combinatie van stoerheid en fin de siècle elegantie in de details. Radio Scheveningen zond vanaf daar uit en dus niet, dat wist ik heel lang niet, vanuit Scheveningen. Het gebouw is nu weer van Staatsbosbeheer en die organiseren in de weekenden excursies en op sommige dagen mag je er zonder begeleiding in.

Moet ik toch eens op letten wanneer je er dan in mag zonder begeleiding. We wonen er niet ver vandaag en Radio Kootwijk is een begrip hier in de omgeving. Dat Radio Scheveningen daar vandaan uitzond wist ik ook niet..

A large empty floor like this is cool isn’t it? There is a fluke somewhere in the tiles. It was explained that the designer wanted a ‘mistake’ because perfection is only in the hands of God. But maybe the tile layer just had an off day. 🙂

Hahah!! What an excellent excuse he found though! The emptiness of the floor and the pattern make it seem somehow royal, like in the queen’s house in Alice in Wonderland, or something similar 😊

Ik ben het helemaal met je eens Marylou. Die omgeving zelf is ook mooi. Een groot heideveld met ernaast een zandverstuiving, midden op de Veluwe. Je kunt er goed fietsen en, mijn voorkeur, fantastisch wandelen.

Since I ‘discovered’ the building I have been a fan. And yes, the Indonesian connection is interesting! The counterpart of the radio station over there was in Bandung. In the thirtees it was possible to have a chat over the radio with relatives and friends in Indonesia. Three minutes had a rate of 33 guilders, a weeks wage then. People saved for that! The Dutch singer Willy Derby made a song about this, called: Hallo Bandung! Among older Dutch folks this song still rings a bell 🙂

It must be fun back then to talk with relatives and friends from the long distance! When you said Hallo Bandung by Willy Derby, we also have a song entitled Halo-halo Bandung! – Bandung was a beautiful city. Unfortunately now it’s over crowded and badly managed – too many people!

Halo-Halo Bandung! I don’t know wether te existence of that song is a coincidence, but I tend to believe is is not. I find this heartwarming. I have never been to Indonesia, unlike many Dutchies. But I very much like to go one day. And then I will most certainly visit Bandung as well, despite the state the city is in. 🙂

*heel leijk woord* ik was er zo dicht in de buurt paar dagen terug shit. Voor op het lijstje ik dacht namelijk dat dit gebouw een heel stuk verder naar boven in Nederland stond. Ik wil er heen punt. Geweldige foto’s maar ja dat weet je zelf ook wel;)

Veel dank Geert! Ik ken de foto’s die je vorig jaar gemaakt hebt. Die waren voor mij onder andere reden om ook binnen te willen kijken nadat ik al een aantal malen rondom het gebouw gelopen was. En ik ben niet teleurgesteld geworden!

Well put! It has a certain strict monumentality and yet soft because of it’s rounded corners. It was meant to depict some kind of sphinx and it standing/sitting in het empytness of the heather field one could be so kind to give it a chance 🙂

Thank you! I had been wandering around the building many times, also some years ago when it was standing scruffy, empty and poluted in the field. I always wanted to have a look inside. So when the opportunity was there, I didn’t hesitate. 🙂
