De steden en stadjes, de stadhuizen inderdaad, de kerken, woningrijen en cafés met prachtige namen, de mannen met buiken van de wielerclub halverwege hun zondagse rondje fietsen met een Rodenbach op het terras. En het landschap van, in dit geval, de Vlaamse Ardennen is voor de wandelaar natuurlijk onovertroffen.
Many thanks! I’m a fan of Belgium too. The most famous, and arguably the prettiest, city of East Flanders is no doubt Gand. But to south there is this wonderful hilly landscape called the Flemish Ardennes with pretty smaller cities all over the place. The statue is called Les Aveugles (the blind) by Guillaume Charlier and it’s made in Tournai (not East Flanders, I cheated here 🙂 ). It depicts 4 blind persons being led by a boy who can see. Also, I subcribed to you page. You make wonderful photographs!!
Thank you I shall reciprocate! I’ve been to Bruges, Turnhout and Mol as well as Ypres, Bastogne and a few others war sites, (husband is a historian 🙂 ) Thanks for the info on the statue!

To my (northen) Dutch eyes the country is although familiar in many aspects (we share a great deal of history and one of the three (!) languages that are spoken in Belgium is Dutch) still a wondrously strange country, that is very dear to me. I was’t that very early really. I don’t why Hyppo was still closed. 🙂
I didn’t know Dutch was one of the common languages in Belgium! I thought it was Flameau,)sp)? French, and English. How cool there is Dutch too! It’s a country on my bucket list, but until I get there I take all the arm-chair tours I can get. 😀

The way the Flemish people speak Dutch is rather different from the way Standard Dutch is sounding. But then, in my tiny country we have many regional dialects/languages that differ a lot from standard Dutch and each other. Not any more but in my youth it was entirely possible that a northener who only spoke Frisian coudn’t communicate with a southener who only spoke Limburgian. 🙂 So yes, Flemish sounds and partly is different, but officially it is Dutch. The other languages in Belgium are indeed French and… German. A small part of the country, in the very north-east, is German spoken.

De details even daar gelaten, zou deze serie qua sfeer ook zomaar op een vroege ochtend ergens in een van de noordelijke provincies gemaakt kunnen zijn, voor mijn gevoel.

De steden waar ik was zijn betrekkelijk klein, en dat komt ook wel overeen met de meeste van de noordelijke steden. Landschappelijk verschilt het toch wel van onze streken. Het is behoorlijk heuvelachtig daar en dichter bevolkt. Maar er zijn geweldige wandelroutes uitgezet die door prachtige stukken (min of meer) leeg land lopen.
Dank je wel Liesbeth! Ja, die huizen – mooi hé? Die hele straat was zo 🙂 Als je, zoals ik, dit soort dingen graag fotografeert is deze streek een paradijs. En buiten de steden ook. Een fietser raad ik versnellingen aan want het is er heuvelachtig. Ook voor de wandelaar is het schitterend terrein.

Thank you! The lady in the back was a poster for an exibition about lace. They hung all around the city. She looks somewhat naughty, so I found it an amusing combination with the seriousness of the statue, depicting Pieter Daens, the priest who stood up for the working class in the late 18hundreds in the city of Aalst, where the picture was taken. 🙂
Lace expo makes sense. 🙂 And an interesting contrast. I thought the statue was a priest, but I didn’t know of Pieter Daens. (And the Wiki note is only in Dutch, which is a bit hard for my limitied “Flamand”. Au revoir.

I do like Belgium. Haven’t been to East Flanders so nice to see it through the photographs. Especially like the bronze statue looking down the street.
